I think that fitting is NPT which is tapered. I had one on my last Ultra, no sealent used and no problems with leaks.
No sealant is needed. FWIW the HD gauge has a separate ground, so sealant can be used if desired without affecting ground, but the oil in the pan is not under pressure and with the tapered pipe-thread it shouldn't leak.
I used to build high HP engines for cages. Turbo's and superchargers that get oil lines going to them all have instructions that state the same thing about NOT using sealants or teflon tape on them. The only concern with using anything of that nature is: contamination of the oil or the tape or compound coming out inside the oil tank and possibly clogging up the oil pump. As long as you use it sparingly there really is nothing to worry about, but the manufacturer has to cover their butt. Most fittings are tapered fittings and will not leak or have problems if properly installed.

OK seriously...if you suspect the speaker is causing the issue with the needle resting, did you remove the speaker to check if that resolved the issue. Only takes a minute to remove the speaker and test the gauge?
Question is, has anyone installed the chrome bezel rings from HD on this guage yet? I just bought the set and am wondering if there might be a "fit" problem... hopefully not.
I'd like to know the answer to this one too! Harley's web site states that the HD oil gauge is "not" compatible with the chrome trim rings which I find very disappointing.
It would be nice to know for sure if the same applied to the McEwan gauge?

Sorry to inform you, but no, the chrome bezels will NOT fit on the McEwan gauge. My 01 Ultra had chrome bezels installed when I bought it, going to powder coat them black to match the oil temp gauge.
I know of several guys who put the oil temp guage in the fairing and because they have oil coolers also installed they are not getting good readings. Don't know if the oil cooler causues that problem but that seems to be the common factor from what I heard.

It's only common if they install the sender as per HD's instructions, which is to tee it into the cooler line. This is unnecessary and adds clutter to an already cluttered area around the oil filter. It also may not read until the oil cooler thermostat opens, which doesn't make sense. Most here use an adapter like the Napa#3220 x 6 x 2 (1/8"F-3/8"M), which adapts the sender into the spare plug in the oil pan. This gives readings of the oil in the pan, which is where most oil-temp senders are located in cars, etc.
