Variable Speed Sensor, 06 Road King, FLHRCI
Just wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone else has ever run into this problem. I had replaced the inner primary seals etc. on the bike and part of that process was removing the starter. Got it all back together and rode the bike a couple times with no issues. Today i went out to start the bike and it turned over just fine but wouldn't start. I got to checking around thinking that I had probably screwed something up during the process of putting it all back together and sure enough, the wires connected to the speed sensor on top of the trans were on the posts of the sensor but were loose. I guess one or maybe both connectors weren't making good contact on the posts. I'm sure I knocked them loose when taking the bolts out/back in the starter. I shoved the connectors back down on the posts of the VSS securely and the bike fired right up. I'm thinking that was the problem; maybe hoping is a better word. My question is; does anyone know that if those connections aren't good, if it will keep the bike from starting? If they really don't matter, then I need to keep on digging before I wind up in Bum**** Egypt and the bike won't start. Thanks in advance for any input.

the speedo sensor is held in place with an allen head machine screw.
I'm thinking you were dealing with the neutral switch...which WOULD keep the starter from operating ( unless clutch lever is pulled)
or you may have the wiring screwy

Thanks for the reply Mike. I'm not entirely sure that VSS is the right name for what I'm dealing with here. It's the sensor located on top of the transmission cover at right about the 5 pm position to the right of the starter looking at the starter from the right side of the bike. After posting this, I had an aah-haa moment (for me anyway) and thought that tomorrow I'll unplug the sensor to see if I can duplicate the problem, e.g. starter spins but bike won't crank. That should tell me if the sensor being unplugged will cause the bike not to start. Just want to feel better that this is the issue before I get to far from the homestead.
