It can be done without removing the exhaust, it's a real bitch getting at the cover screws especially the bottom ones.
You'll need a small allen key, one with a ball end works well once the torque is broken.
Worst case you may need to loosen the exhaust just to get some wiggle room, but I managed to get mine off without.
Also pay attention to the length of the screws, there are a couple that are longer than the rest. If you look at the cover it won't be hard to figure out where they belong, but save yourself the aggravation and put them in the right spot the first time.
