tax time dreaming
I am going to mix up this thread with a couple question since everyone up north is stuck in doors. We only get to go on one longer ride a year. This year it looks like we are going basically from Sterling, Il up to Green Bay, then up through Door county in a 4 day span. This is my longest ride ever and the first with a FLHTKL instead of a Dyna. Am looking to buy helmets for me and the wife. I have not bought helmets in a long time. I want to stick with the mike set up that came with the bike and buy her one also. The helmet I am looking at is the https://www.bellhelmets.com/powerspo...street/mag-225. They are cheaper and have the built in sunglasses. Will the headset play well with this? Thoughts on the helmet?. My second question is that we like the micro breweries. Where is a good site to get info for the GPS on this? And last we just bought rain suits. My boots are not waterproof but very comfy. Should We get the rain boot covers. That should do it. I'm so excited about this trip I might even buy a new tooth brush for the trip (-: Thanks guys in advance from a Newbie!

Before you order anything, go to your local cyclegear or harley shop and try on helmets to see what actually fits.
Take that information with you and order them online to save a buck if you'd like.
So many helmets out there that fit differently... nothing like wearing a helmet for 12 hours that doesn't fit exactly right. Hot spots, bad air flow etc.
GF is using a HD helmet which is actually a HJC IS-33. Great helmet (for her) but she tried on probably 15 different helmets before picking that one.

Headsets can be found pretty cheaply in the touring parts section.
Typically new for 50-75 bucks shipped. That's where I buy all of mine.

Helmets, must be tried on before purchase period, nothing worse than a helmet that doesn't fit perfectly. All the helmets I have fit headsets into have ear pockets of one sort or another, but, the depth of the ear pocket at least for me have always had to be deepened to allow space for the speakers so they don't put any pressure on your ear, but this is very simple to do, just go at it slowly to get the perfect fit. As for boot covers, dry feet are happy feet, I ride mostly with hiking boots which are water proof, Wolverine makes a great pair, I have never tried the boot covers but I am sure they work well as long as the rain pants are shingled over the boot cover.
Door county is beautiful, make sure you stop by the HD museum on the way by Milwaukee, worth the stop so I am told, depending on what time of year it could be a bit cool as its surrounded by water, so make sure you have some good layering going on.

Testing out helmets before buying is spot on.
Initially wanted a couple of different models but the pads were either too tight on the forehead after 15 minutes in the store or the fit was just not right.
Finally after all the help at the Philly Store (Revzilla) and settling on the perfect fit, I decided to buy my helpmet right there on the spot.
Could not walk away after all the support the staff provided me.

I got the HJC Symax III for a good price, http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street...ii_helmet.html
It has a flip down sun shield and takes a intercom system. Used it last season and it seemed pretty comfortable. Actually ordered it online and it fit! Didn't get the intercom yet but if my wife takes a little more interest in riding I might get them. If you get through Green Bay there a few Microbreweries in town to try and a new one opening soon, sure you can find something for the GPS but don't know of any off hand. Also Lambeau field is pretty cool if you are in to that kind of thing. Door county is nice and there is also the ferry to Washington Island. Good luck.

I have used leatherup.com for helmets. They have a great policy. Pick the one you want. They ship it to you and include the form for return exchange because they know when you get it, it might not fit just right. Granted it could take a few weeks to get the one you want if you have to swap a couple times. I recommend a non-HD shop as they will usually carry multiple brands of helmets. Boot Covers are the only way to go I feel. You still have your comfy boots but the covers keep them dry.

we live in WI, and just did the whole door county thing this past summer. Couple of things...
One, if you like wine, you'll be in constant bliss in door county. there's a winery approximately every 9 to 13 inches over there. Like, holy ****, there is a lot of wine being made.
Two, from where you'er coming from, the harley museum is kinda on your way, we stopped for a few hours, it was actually pretty cool. worth checking out.
Third, there's a ferry from north door county to some island... i'm drawing a blank on the name of the island right now... something to do with washington if i remember correctly. Everyone will tell you that you have to go check out this island. Let me tell you, the best part of going to check out that island is the ferry ride. The island is stupid, boring, and borderline creepy even. I came away from that sincerely wondering why they hell everybody said we needed to go there. Also, the ferry ride isn't exactly cheap either.
And again, wine. so much wine.

use this for the brewery: http://www.brewerymap.com/
you can search by location or plan a trip. either case you show you all the breweries within whatever distance you want. but be sure to make sure each location has a tasting room. they list every brewery even ones you cant visit.
