you are not going to massage them much. you have to find the sweet spot on six gallon tanks where they lay flat. i've put them on six gallon tanks before.

 

Had them on my street bob. Loved the look.

 

overused or not, that wasn't the question. who cares? the op likes them, more power to him.

i've seen them done to where the 'cream' colored insert was color matched to the rest of the bike. i thought that looked pretty good.

the big thing to look at is your existing tank. if the emblems will not cover the decal, then you're going to have to do a lot more work to remove them. it isn't a simple peel off.

 

I've talked to my painter, he says it'll take a complete repaint.

 

No other choice. Now someone mentioned fitting them on a 6 gallon tank, which you could consider, at the same time as using those emblems!

 

indeed, but if we all thought alike it would be boring - an alternate opinion can motivate someone to consider something other than group think... if not the OP, then maybe someone reading this topic later.
