Default Actual miles

Is there any way to tell the actual miles on a Harley? Let's say a bike seems too good to be true, is there anyway to check? What keeps someone from just switching the speedometer?
I guess you could ask where the service and warranty was done and maybe check with the dealer.
Is there some way look at the computer?
I just don't want to find a good deal and it turns out not to be.
Thanks.

Actual mileage is logged in the ECM not the speedometer.

No it won't. I replaced a speedo on my 2008 sportster and it showed the mileage which the second meter came with

I thought it was in the ECM as well... Never made a change, but was told it had to be hooked to the digi tech to be recognized.

Service records are a good indication of actual mileage. State Inspection reports/receipts. If the previous owner didn't keep any records, buyer beware.

Every speedometer on ECM bikes that I have changed used the miles in the ECM. Absolutely nothing is stored in the speedometer.

All that is in there is the lcd display, circuit board and lights. NO memory chip at all.

Total internet BS that a EMC controlled HD con report zero miles by installing a new speedo.

Not all bikes store the mileage in the ECM. My 2010 Ultra Classic did not.

What does a Sportster have in common with a Touring bike?
