The mileage for the bike is stored in the ECM. As stated before, once a Speedo gauge has been locked to a particular ECM, it will not revert to the actual mileage logged on the ECM of another bike. What this means is, install a new, never installed gauge, it will take the mileage as recorded on your ECM and be locked after a given amount of miles. Take a USED, previously installed gauge, and it will continue to read based on the mileage already recorded on it when it was removed.
This may not apply to every gauge, but bottom line, mileage is stored on the ECM. whether its recoverable or not, is another question
