Putting on my first poker run
I am putting on a poker run toraise funds formy sons school band program.I have been on about 10 runs myself, but this is my first one that Iam putting onand I am not sure what to expect. I dunno what scares me more, having only 10 bikes show up, or having 500!
I was on one this weekend that had everyone ride out to the first stop together, and then you made your own way to the remaining stops. It broke the pack up into a bunch of 5-12 bike groups. I really liked the format and thought I would use it for mine. I can get a police escort out to a major road (no traffic lights) and then down to the first stop. Opinions?
Anyone who has put one on and has any advice, please share. I wanna make sure I have all the bases covered.
Tim
PS. if you are in the St. Louis area... May 20th, is the ride. PM me for details.

RE: Putting on my first poker run
I live in St Louis and haven't heard a word about it, but I already have plans for next Sunday anyway. I don't see it in any of the biker mags, either. What are you doing to get the word out?
The regular run format (turn left, go here, stop is on the left...) works better for people who aren't familar with the stops. I went on the Statesmen's run Sunday and would have gotten completely lost without directions from one stop to the next.

Advertise is by far the best thing you can do. Go to biker bars, hang outs see if dealers will allow you to put flyers in their store.
Try and make all your stops on the right side of the road. Last stop before the end should have a gas station close by, keep stops away from heavy traffic areas.
Ride the route several times including the morning of the ride. Make directions clear and simple. If you can print them so they can be folded to show directions to the next stop not every stop at once. If people have a good time there will be more the next time you have one.
Good luck

FLYERS EVERY WHERE.... Let them know what the ride supports... PRIZES - DONUTS & COFFEE and the start - FOOD at the end & MORE FLYERS - Bars - Bike Shops - Service Clubs - Hand Outs - Have a ride route that isn't a real estate tour and normally around 100 miles total - 4 to 5 stops along the way - You can get service clubs like KOC - Elks - Eagles to be a stop site as they normally will help man the site and offer food and drink for the riders... Get help as it's not a 1 person thing... Most important "It's for the Kids" & have fun

Ride the route, time to each stop. Suggest bathroom stop locations along the way. Let folks pick the small groups they want to ride with on the run. Get plenty of door prizes, even small stuff is great, everyone feels like a winner. Offer cash prizes, most people will put the $ back into the kitty for the charity.
Have a good staff to man the stop, put them in locations were you don't have to work around traffic.
Have a good time. Pick a fair ground or other large open area for the end pt.
