Default Speakers go off, toggling switch turns them on

Has anyone else had this problem? The speakers on my 2012 Ultra Limited sometimes go off, and simply toggling the speaker switch back and forth turns them back on. I thought it was the switch itself so I replaced it, but the problem is still occurring. Also strange is the fact that it doesn't usually happen until after I've been riding a few hours, then it happens constantly. Ever minute or two the speakers go off, so I get tired of toggling the switch to get them to come back on. As far as the headset speakers go, I don't think it's happened to them, they seem to always work.

Time to send it off to Iron Cross Audio.
Same thing happened to my 2011.

Did you ship it to them? Just the radio itself, or the switch too?

I can't remember when Moco changed the handlebar clamp bolts. The older style bolts had boltheads that were high enough to contact the front-bottom of the HK radio and eventually would fracture a circuit board trace and create an intermittent. This intermittent usually affected the display and other control functions. Harley went to bolts with a shorter head to remedy the problem at some point, just can't remember when.

As suggested, Iron Cross can fix your radio and make other functional and performance improvements. Check out those bolts and change them to the newer models when you take out the radio to send it off to IC. They are a forum sponsor and very fast on the return of your unit.

Here's a pic of the old bolts and the new bolts. The new ones have the Torx heads:

Same thing happened to me on my 2010. It's the head unit! I did the same as you and replaced the toggle switch which was like flushing money down the toilet. When this one goes, I'm buying an after market head unit!

My '06 Ultra had the same problem. When I checked it out I discovered three things.

First, one of the resistors soldered on the right front speaker was loose. I soldered the resistor.

Second, the bike has a Hog Tunes amp. A slide switch for 2 or 4 channel operation was positioned halfway between settings. I set the switch to 2-channel.

Third, when I ran a diagnostic using the radio's built-in feature, the results showed an open right rear speaker. The speaker worked but the sound was faint. I swapped the right/left rear speakers to confirm the defect; then I replaced the speaker.

After I completed these fixes, the speakers worked. I no longer had to toggle the speaker switch to make it work. You might search the forum to see if the stereo on the '12 Ultra has a diagnostic function.

Having this problem right now. I was going after the switch until I read this. I have the maintence manual going to check the diagnostics now. I thought it was speakers and pulled the fairing and check all of them. Mine sounds identical, works when you first ride but after a couple of songs it goes out and only gets worse to the point of not even using the radio

Check the sticky out and follow the troubleshooting for a Harmon Kardin, it worked for me!

Had the same exact problem. Like others said, check the sticky on the instructions for the HK head unit diagnostics. First time I ran in, there were no errors. Obviously the speakers were working. Then I made sure that I had the most up to date software on the radio.

I ran a second test when the audio went out and had an error code that front speaker was open.

Contacted Iron Cross and coordinated my repair around a two week vacation that I was taking.

Here is another tip.

Check out Ebay for Iron Cross Audio. Saved myself $10 bucks. Think the standard repair is $250 from Iron Cross. I paid $240 on E-bay.

When you win the auction, just go to their website and print out the form. Fill it out and include a copy of the paid eBay invoice.
