I've read quite a bit that scraping isn't an issue with 4" bags. Not saying it's 100% true, it's just what I read. Also depends on how much you lean your bike.
Not sure on other brands, but Top Shop has the Vipers that are angled on the bottom.
I didn't want to install the full blown stretched bag custom look so I went with CVO style bags from V-twin. I had installed a SG fascia to complete the look.
4.5" bags, lowered 2" in the front with air ride in the rear. I have to try to get the bags to scrape and that's when two up. Maybe I ride too slow, but seems you would need to be pretty low and leaning hard to get the bags to scrape all the time.
Jmc22 has some nice quality parts there. I've been looking at that exact setup, minus the side panels. I'm pretty sure my wife would be pretty pissed about those side panels in her way. However jmc22 doesn't have rear pegs on his bike so I don't think he is worried about that. Looking at a 4.5" bag with a bike on its kickstand I'm not sure how easily they would drag but I'm sure they will sooner than later, which is the only thing holding me back at this point.
I ride solo which is the reason I took my rear pegs off, but they do fit the same with the flared side panels as they do with the regular panels, so your misses feet may not be an issue.
I'm running 13" JRI shocks in the rear, with all of the twisty canyon roads here in Colorado, I've not scraped once - you can see by the rear shot, there is quite a bit of clearance.
I'd recommend raising the rear up especially if you ride 2-up a lot.
I had some 4" fairing plus bags fit and looked ok but not the quality of the Bad Dad bags I just got, always ride 2 up never had them scrape. Check this out from dirty bird concepts
I second the VTwin CVO bags from Eastern if you want just the subtle stretched look. Quality is top notch and they don't need much prep at all. Good luck!!
I've been looking as well, I like the took of the longer custom 4.5" range bags but I don't want to have a bike that's scrapping all the time. It's not very reassuring when all these manufacturers sell "skid plates" for there bags. To me it's also a package look. If your going with long bags you need side panels or they look like a square block. Then it's like might as well do a stretched tank..... Damn... My 21" doesn't look quite right maybe a 23" or 26"? I love the look I just have mixed feelings. Kesean has the answer... 2 bikes!!! Tourer and a bagger.
LOL! Yes 2 bikes is the answer but not practical for everyone. The skid plates are just reassurance. I have air ride in the rear so that is what I have them. On my first set of bags which were Fat Baggers by the way I never came close to scrapping the bags. So you can get away with stretched bags without the skid plates. But you are correct on the looks. If you are getting the rear end done you might as well get the side covers and stretched tank to complete the look. But that is just me. You can get away with just doing the rear without the extras and still look good.
