Default 1000 mile service

Hi out there, I recently cross my first 1000 miles of my new RD King, and was wondering if the the 1000 mile service was really worth taking it in for or is it something I could do myself. If so what all is done during that service.

You CAN do it yourself, just make sure you document and do everything on the checklist in the service manual. Personally, that's one of the services that I want the dealer to do. Too early in the game just in case something is wrong.

I don't want to start a pissing match but WHYdoes the 1K and 10K need to be done by the dealer? And why would they do a better job than the owner?

I typically do my own service -- I love tinkering with motorcycles. However, I've always taken my ride in for the 1K check -- with a new bike, I just feel better about having the service dept. go over it thoroughly.

The local dealer just started a new program. They sell a pre-paid service plan that is essentially the cost of the three scheduled services up through the 10K. With the plan, you get additional oil changes at 2.5K & 7.5K, free drive belt replacement, brake pads, tire mountings & battery replacements, if needed, during the 1st 3 years. You also get front of the line same day service, including a loaner bike of your choice (no appointment required).

Interesting plan, for those that might be on the fence.

I know a bud who did that at the Lynnwood store gunkholes. He got some pre-paid service which he likes (although I'm not entirely sure as to why he purchased that service and had it added to his financing). In any event he does like the fact he has 'gold' or 'platinum' type of service where he can just take his bike in for say fluid change and they will do it that day for him. He can get a 'loaner' but pays sumfin like $50 a day for it while his bike is being worked on.

I am not entirely sure how much those plans cost but he seems to like it.

I got this one at Eastside. I don't typically do those kind of plans, but this seemed like a pretty good deal, especially tha part about getting the bike in and out on the same day, with a free loaner. I'll still do a lot of my own wrenching, but this is just some added peace of mind. Can't see financing it though; I put the whole thing on my Visa to get the airline miles, then paid it off. Got a good deal on the 06 RK trade-in, so it was manageable.
