don't know enough about the beltdrive to talk but I would like to get rid of the comp noise.
if you don;t like noise... imagine the rattle of a dry clutch, whir of belt and swooogling of the air
( I have a belt inside the primary of my '53- which either way has a dry clutch. The primary contains some of the extra noise but not all of it.
The prime reason for the change was to eliminate the crankcase breather into the primary ( which on old models lubes the chain)
I get some parts for my 74 FXE from a guy that has been into Harleys his whole life. He is 80 now and has a barn full of new and used parts. I took a 79 out there and it had an in-primary belt, he told me if I do any kind of traveling, you better keep a spare belt on your bike. Dealers will have chains in stock but not these aftermarket belts and they cost around $200 plus install. He suggusted going back with a chain. i ended up trading the bike off anyways.
For those of us who ride through heavy sustained rain on occasions that open primary belt raises anxieties. I for one would prefer my clutch and primary not to be running in the teeth of a storm and awash with water!

I have rode through torrential rain on my open primary softail. It's not an issue.
If you have ever drove one with cruse on, you will find out why Harley has the compensator. May not affect you since your hands are on the bars which tends to make you attuned to the uneven impulse. Drive a passenger crazy. It's like 2 steps fwd, 1/4 step back, 3000 times a minute at 70
