FWIW, 1500 rpm is probably too low an RPM. You might not be "lugging" the engine, but you might not be getting enough oil flow for good engine life. It'd be interesting to see the big rod ends after awhile at this low an rpm. Older HDs used to be quite good at hammerin' on the surfaces because of too little oil flow at too low an rpm. It might be some different with the better oil pumps, but my gut says 1500 is too low.

There is a point where you can gear too low and or high. By changing the primary a little, it puts into a gear between wnere it is at. If 5th is to tall & 4th is to low, it would bring it in more useable. Mine is a 99, so I have the 3.37? I get 45-50 mpg. I don't lug my engine very often and am probablly one of the more agressive riders on a Harley that I have noticed. I would find it hard to ride with any taller gearing, except on the highway, and then I find myself wanting to go to 6th on my 5spd. So eventually I will go to a 6 spd. 1st is almost to tall also, but I am use to riding faster bikes and am enjoying the Ultra a lot more that I thought I would. I am glad I got it.

It was my understanding (applies to Softails) that in 2000, they went back to the 70T rear wheel pulley. To compinsate they went from a 24T (3.37)compinsator (engine) sprocket to a 25T.(3.15)
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
It makes sense from a performance standpoint to keep the 24T for better acceleration. If you had the S/E 6 sp w/the stock 1-5 ratios and that 6th (true overdrive) you really would have the best of all worlds.
W/95 inches and some good torque cams . . . Hmmm . . .
And yes 1500 is TOO low of an rpm to operate. It's not a diesel.

ORIGINAL: Ram
This does sound interesting! I wonder that the over all change would be when you hop up the engine?
If this makes the bike run that much more efficiently with a basic stock engine, what effect will the same gearing upgrade be with, tossing in 95 jugs, heads with porting, cam, gear drive for cam and DTT??

I believe some said '01 was the last year of the 3.37.
That is correct. The last of the M&M FI bikes came with 3.37. This was doneto make up for the fact that the old M&M FI bikes were weaker when compared to the carbed bikes. So to make up the difference HD gave 'em 3.37 gearing. They changed it to 3.15 when they went to the better Delphi FI systems in 2002.
Being the owner of a 2001 Ultra, I can honestly say that the 3.37 gearing is the few redeeming things about having an M&M bike. Well, mines no longer M&M, I went with the Zippers T-Max with Auto-Tune.
