Question voltage ??

2005 ultra
now that I have all led lights front and rear , just changed to the tl phase 7 headlight and spots,, now my volt gauge reads 14.5 Volt while cruising, has allways been 14 volt , is this normal?? or do I have a volt reg. fixing to take a chit.

thanks mike

Led's use less power /amps etc so i am not surprised your shwoing .5 more volts at cruise rpm.

BTW,without leds on my 09 but with brighter tech PIA light bulb type upgrade in the main headlight, passing lamps along with a BAL rear LED tail light also shows 14.5V @ cruise speed and its (battery) has been fine this season riding 7,500miles thus far.

So going from my esp going 7,500+ miles showing 14.5V thus far with no issues i wouldn't not worry about it .

BTW,14.5v is the highest i like to see it so if your bikes charge voltage goes higher then 14.5V for any length of time id have it looked into ASAP.

The VR should regulate voltage to below about 14.8 VDC.( 14.8 VDC is max spec for 12 volt systems)

if you see more than that- you need to look further. as higher voltage will damage the battery

with a real voltmeter at the battery.( the gauge is notoriously inaccurate)

part of what you are seeing is the voltage drop through the wiring harness- the in dash gauge measures the voltage at the fairing...the more things turned on ( spots, high beam etc) the more current draw and the voltage drops in the wiring....meanwhile the voltage at the battery and the taillight is just fine.

ride on

cool thanks ,, i'll just keep an eye on it ,, put a volt meter to it this weekend ,, you know about gauges not allways accurate.

thanks mike
