Default 10,000 mile service - how critical - how soon???

'05 Ultra.

I hadthe full blown expensive 5000 mile service interval thing done at ~ 6000 miles.

Then had routine basic maintenance done at ~ 9000 miles - oils, filter....... nothing special. I'll repeat that at 12,000 miles.

QUESTION:

Is there anything critical/mandatory that the MOCO stealerships do at the 10,000 mile service interval??? $660 seems like allot dough.

Can you get that "MAJORWORK"done at 15,000 or 20,000 miles???

Scoot has full warranty for another five years.

THANKS.

Your 10k should be done at around 10k miles. I have to agree $660 seems a little steep. If you're mechanicly inclined at all, buy a manual and do the work yourself; at least all that you feel comfortable with doing. Otherwise, shop around for a better price.

In Va, where I am, the 10K Service is 420 with synthetic oils. I would shop around or DIY

If you look at the maintenance schedule in your owners manual you will see that there is little difference between 5k 10k 15k 20k service. Basically it’s an oil change. The reason HD dealers charge so much is they do things that are not necessary such as change the tranny oil and primary oil at each interval when the owners’ manual clearly says it is not required. I called HD home office and they said to follow the maintenance schedule as printed and all will be fine. I will do all that I can myself and have the dealer just do the items that I am not capable of doing. You should be able to negotiate with them because they would rather get some of your money than none at all. It works for me. Oh by the way get yourself a service manual and you will see that you can do a lot of the work yourself.

And I thought it was just me. I had the stealer put a set of pullback touring handlebars at the start of the season - included all new cables / some braided. Didn't want to deal with a project that big. $440.

But when I checked it out when I got home, they only tightened HALF THE FREAKIN' SCREWS!!!!!!!!

What a half A$$ JOB!!!!!!!!! UFB. You name it - EVERYTHING was loose. Pissed me off.

Could have bitched -but why - would have been to no avail.

They are friendly dudes, but I'm going to avoid them whenever/wherever possible from now on.

That is why I'm asking here about the 10,000 mile service interval.
Luckily, to date, I have done ALL my mods except the bars.

THANKS.

I sort of go thru maintnence list as often as I can. Sort of nibble away at it.That way when the critical things need done its not as big of a deal. Like to tinker but stear away from major mechanical fixes. Good to know its done wright but my time is an expensive commodity.
look at service manuel? Im at work now but think one main thing is neck bearings. Easy to lube (search). Tighten? Haveint got there yet. I suspect most things on maintance list are more of a good inspection but writen by a moco lawyer

I just finished my 10000 mile check up yesterday, 1ST timer!!! I followed directions as the book called out and didnt get in a hurry. Yes it it time consuming. It took me about 1 1/2 days of not getting in a hurry. book said to check torque on a bolt. I proceeded to do as it said. A big satisfaction of doing it yourself. Bike runs better now than when it was new. LOL Dan
