Interesting cause I think it's widely known or thought that we just... Drain and fill 32oz and check for leaks at the plug and be done.

Hmmm.

Now that my gearset is out... I may need that full 32 but in the future I will follow that procedure.

I wonder how many whips out there have a bad or "going" trans output mainshaft gearset bearing. 30k, seems ridiculous!

I doubt a couple extra ounces of fluid is causing the bearing failure. If you change the fluid on the jiffy stand you certainly can leave a few ounces in there so adding 28oz. initially makes sense. If you change it with the bike upright you are not leaving much in there.

The main bearing failures IMO are attributed to the stock primary chain tensioner. Mine went at just over 20k miles. Aggressive riding will accelerate the main bearing departure.

Does the tranny have to be pulled to replace the mainshaft bearing?

the trans gearset has to be pulled and the final gear which is pressed into the rear of the trans case has to be pushed in from the outside.

Ok thanks. I have a feeling I'll be doing the same thing pretty soon on mine.

As it was explained to me, the oil would puddle over the bearing area when filled at 32 oz and sitting on the jiffy stand. It took too long to drain out when stood up and subjected the bearing to skate. Again, I'm not an engineer but I doubt they'd publish a TSB just to save 4 oz of oil. I just do as I'm told and trained.

i think the "automatic" chain tensioner is the culprit, too. isn't 07 the first year they began using the automatic ??

whenever i had my primary cover off, the chain always seemed too tight for my liking.

after 35.000 miles , my mainshaft bearing started getting noisy, a little rough feeling. replaced it.

i put a Hayden spring tensioner on about 2000 miles later because of what sounded like primary chain whirring noise.

the Hayden, reduced the whir noise completely, made shifts much less clunky, and even reduced some vibrations that were reaching my fairing. much smoother now.

if i were Harley, i would put these on all bikes.

just my opinion

Dodger, I bought the hayden and am waiting for it to arrive.

I also am going to be putting a sealed 1 piece inner primary bearing... not too many comments on that other than a couple doubters and a few who are encouraging.
