Default Loud "klunk" when starting bike

I've got an '07 RK, my first harley. I love the bike but when I start it, occasionally it makes a loud "klunk" sound(best way to describe it). I took it to the dealer and of course it started perfectly every time with no excess noise. Does anyone have any advice?
By the way these forums are great.

Are you using the start button or kick starting it?

Does it make the "klunk" when you put in 1st gear or as the engine itself trys to start? Does the klunk come from the engine or out the exhaust? Trying to help, but, need more info.

Mine does the same thing. Got an 07 Fatboy. I believe that this was talked abouta couple of months back on another thread. I have been told-not from the stealer-that it is from the starter and not a cause for concern. Just another freaky Harley phenomenah.

Just curious. Does it happen when it's cold or hot or both?

The '07's starter will KNOCK pretty loud on start-up, KLUNK when 1st is engaged, PING at a70mph roll-on, WHINE in 5th, and CLATTER in 6th at 45mph, POP on decel, andDETONATE on 87 Octane. Not to mention your teeth will CHATTER in neutral.

If your bike strays from the sounds in this posting........get to the dealer immediately.......it ain't normal.

I was told it's a compression release to help start the 96cu engine. Thats what the stealer told me, not sure I believe him yet.
