Use of Spot Lights

Use of Spot Lights
I have an Electra Glide and like other models I have 2 lights on either side of my headlight. The switch for them is labeled "Spot" lights but I think that's a bit of a misnomer.
When and why do you guys use these lights? Help illuminate the way? Cut under the fog? Visibility?
I use them for visibility day or night. The problem is these lights are not very directional. I can't align or aim them so they don't shine into the eyes of oncoming traffic. If I use them at night drivers will flash their lights at me. I need to have them on only when no one is coming.
Now for my complaint; These lights are wired up so they only come on when I am on low beam. That's the opposite of what I would expect. When no one is around I want lots of light. As someone approaches I dim my lights and would hope the spot lights would turn off but they turn on.
I simply can not use these lights at night.

Yep, my toggle switch broke so I hard wired mine so that they are on all the time regardless of high or low beam. And does not take much to align them which is especially important if you have like I do, a much brighter than stock such as the TL phase 7.

I've had a new 2010 Ultra Classic and now a 2013 limited and i think mine were delivered staying on for both low and high beam. i might be mistaken but i don't think so. i switched out my stock headlights and spots to LED's.....thats another story....and the only time i turn off my spots is when i approach the security gate where i work. other than that, they stay on all the time.
