a wheel bearing going out at around 10k really shouldn't be a surprise. part of a 10k service is to replace the wheel bearings. just pointing that out. so expect it at 20k as well.

 

Really I'll have to check that out.

 

Anyone with the 2007 to 2011 9276 (non abs bearing made in India) should upgrade to the new 9276A bearing. The ABS 9252 bearings seem to be OK. Until recently there wasn't a non OEM replacement for the 9252 bearing but you can now get a ceramic version from Brocks. Getting a good quality bearing install and removal tools is a good idea.

 

Differs from HD's 2009 model advertising at the time:

"Sealed automotive style wheel bearings requiring no end play adjustments and
service interval of 100,000 miles"

Did I miss something ? Isn't his bike an 11? Ill look at my manual again but it says bearings should be replaced and something about the lip of the bearings.. I just put new bearings in my new wheels and was even told to check them again in 10k. Ill look at manual tomorrow again.

 

2007 last year of 9247 front and back.no abs.

@60 thinking of replacing my (07) rear bearings just cause changing tires so often,i might have added extra undo stress on them along with the IDS bearing just as pm.

 

I see nothing on this in the maintenance schedules in either my service or operator's manual. They don't even mention checking them let alone replacing them. Even then you should expect years of service out of any sealed bearing in just about any application. And if it's true, Harley better be going back to the drawing board because there is nothing else on the road that would require changing wheel bearings that often.

 

Deviating from the OP's original question, but since it has been brought up in the discussion, i thought i offer some factual info about the OEM #9247 1" ID x 21mm wide bearings (and also the #9267 3/4" ID x 21mm brg) used in 2000-2007 Tourers (and others)...

They are currently SINGLE ROW, but with 4 seals (2 per side). I don't know what year they changed to single (or if they ever were double, I only have seen single rows). Below are pictures i took of an Original OEM #9247 bearing I removed from a 2006 Tourer. I also recently looked at an OEM #9267 3/4" I removed from 2000-01 Touring Rear wheel...guess what?...Single Row

Besides being good quality bearings, i believe the seal arrangement contributes greatly to their longevity. The outer seal is fixed to the stationary inner race and seals against the rotating outer race whereas the inner seal is fixed to the outer race and seals against the inner race with some grease between the seals, thus creating a tough path for water and grit to arrive at the ***** and races.

Got the new bearing and had my indy put it in. Ended up going with the SKF. I didn't have the bearing puller kit so just had him do it. I ordered the pit posse vt 120 from Amazon for 88 bucks to have when I replace the others. I went to pick it up and he showed me the old bearing, it was pretty rusty on the inside, water got in there somehow. He cleaned everything up for me and said all is good. Here is a pic of what the bearing looked like. I tore the bearing apart and even the ball bearings were rusty.

 

$125 each!
