Help finding this G-dam noise
ok I have a '96 RoadKing injected. I have a noise that I describe as a ching ching... ching ... ching ching ching. Seems to be coming from the engine/transmission area. Here is what I have tried to isolate the noise.
Only happens 50 mph or higher
only happens in 4 or 5 gear
AND ONLY HAPPENS WHILE TURNING AROUND LEFT CORNERS
while I'm hereing the noise,
accelerating/decelerating
clutch in or out
going over bumps
applying either front or rear brake doesn't make the noice go away
any ideas???
this is a weird one
thanks

just need to find a long hill that I can travel 50 mph that banks left for more that a few seconds. Haven't found one yet unfortunately.
the noise sounds to me almost like the primary chain hitting the cover but the sound is not constant when it happens. Doesn't sound like a vibration. But antything is possible.

How many chips on the primary magnet? Mine did that in slow left hand turns (probably did it at speed but it must really be loud for you to hear something at 50)
My alternator rotor spline was gone and the compensator was driving the rotor. However, the slipping wore a groove in the face letting the front sprocket move over and the sprocket tooth was nipping the chain link. It made a noticeable ching ching ching.
When I got the rotor at the dealer, it was mid July and he told me he had already sold a dozen that year. Popping the clutch or heavy down shifting will shuck the 10 splines one pretty easily.
PS..Make darn sure you do not have a tire bulge.

I had a ching ching noise on a 1998 Road King classic.
It was rather difficult to isolate.
Finally found it.
The starter had a chrome cover on the end...3 inch circle piece.
Called a starter end cover.
The circle has one center bolt and then a bridge.
Bridge was loose.
It looked perfect but one of the nut UNDER the cover on the bridge was missing.
Made cover loose.
Ace hardware had the .10 cent nut.
