Default Speedometer stopped working

Hi all...2000 flhtpi 53000 miles on it..... Speedometer was giving me wrong readings intermittently. ...just shut it down and restart and it would be fine...now it doesn't work at all..wtf...also the automatic cancel on the directionals stopped working at the same time I am assuming they are tied together....my question is where do I start looking for the problem? I do have a service manual, just haven't had time to look,at work now....
Thanks in advance for all suggestons...

Vehicle speed sensor is bad. Replace it.

The above is most likely cause BUT before spending any money check cleanliness and tightness of electrical connections. To replace the VSS you will need to remove the plug anyway, pull it now and clean the connectors and give it a try. If that doesn't do it, unplug and re plug the connection to the speedo. These are free, needing only your time. Then, if function is not restored, start throwing parts at it with the VSS as the first part. Have you recently unplugged any connectors that might not have gone fully back together?

Take said speed sensor out and clean it off, probably covered in fine bround metal and stuff. Then see if it work. Chances are it will, but eventually it will need replacing.

Right side of the trans just above the oil fill. It will be a black sensor bolted to the top of trans with a single allen head bolt.

Right side, near the starter. Long allen wrench to loosen bolt.

Easy to get to.

Are the speedometer and self cancelling signals related?

Yes...if the speedometer is not working, the bike thinks you are sitting still & the signals won't cancel.
