There is an old thread on "updating" to the newer bags ... Do a search ... Also I saw a member selling a set of older bags for a real reasonable price ... The earlier bags up through 1992 are getting real hard to find ... I've seen a number of "fixes" to ensure that the bag lids don't come off, including a "hitch pin" installed into the "tongue" of the front ... Use to be real common to see a bag lid on the side of the road at big events, so you're not alone.
found this for reference ... check fit for left or right side

Although bags over the years look the same, the ones on our bikes (I have a '90, owned from new) are smaller than the version that followed (I also have a set of them!) with the side hinges, the lids won't swap over.
It is possible to fit the later bags, however that involves moving the battery under the seat. There are various ways of doing that. I made a scratch-built battery tray and kept my oil bag, the more extreme way being to install a later trans with oil-tank underneath.
There is a recent thread where a member lost both his early lids, I'll try to find it, as there were some tips on finding replacements.
