Check the Dunlop website for tread depth of new Dunlop tires. A new Harley Dunlop rear tire has between 9/32 and 12/32 depth, depending on the model, while a new front one has 5/32 to 6/32. This means you have used up around 80% of the usable tread life in 7500 miles. You are not going to finish a 3000 mile trip on your present rear tire! Apparently your indy is confusing front and rear tire tread depth.

Randy,

I figure the well done 3-22-2003 is in memoriam. Do you mind sharing the significance? I apologize if it has been discussed before but I'm fairly new here.

I too have a long trip coming up…Georgia to LA and LA to DC then DC back to Georgia. Having 7100 miles on the rear tire I will be changing it next week before I head out. As other have said…change it now and enjoy the ride.

FWIW, when I took the ERC course last spring, the instructors performed an inspection on all of the bikes as we arrived and registered. One of the checks was the tread depth and the instructor told me that minimum tread depth for participation in the course was 3/32.

I would hate to get caught in some rain along the way and have to worry about it. I would change it, one less thing you have to worry about.

NOW!!!!! 3\32 WILL NOT MAKE THE 3000 TRIP... AS THE TIRE WEARS OUT\LOOSES THREAD - IT WEARS FASTER - MORE HEAT = FASTER WEAR

Back in tthe 70,s I was crying about the price of of $35 for a goodyear for my metric bike and the Journeyman I worked with, HD rider said, What,s your *** worth? I bought the tire. Lesson learned.

Just returned from a 1300 mile round trip. 2 days before I left, I had a new front tire mounted. It seems that when you are down to last 10% of tread, that's when you have problems. I was surprised at the number of people in HD stores for Outer Banks Bike Week that were getting tires mounted. That should have been done before they left home. It's not worth the risk to try and squeeze a few extra miles.
