Replace Rear Tire Now or After Trip?

RE: Replace Rear Tire Now or After Trip?
Check the Dunlop website for tread depth of new Dunlop tires. A new Harley Dunlop rear tire has between 9/32 and 12/32 depth, depending on the model, while a new front one has 5/32 to 6/32. This means you have used up around 80% of the usable tread life in 7500 miles. You are not going to finish a 3000 mile trip on your present rear tire! Apparently your indy is confusing front and rear tire tread depth.

FWIW, when I took the ERC course last spring, the instructors performed an inspection on all of the bikes as we arrived and registered. One of the checks was the tread depth and the instructor told me that minimum tread depth for participation in the course was 3/32.

RE: Replace Rear Tire Now or After Trip?
Just returned from a 1300 mile round trip. 2 days before I left, I had a new front tire mounted. It seems that when you are down to last 10% of tread, that's when you have problems. I was surprised at the number of people in HD stores for Outer Banks Bike Week that were getting tires mounted. That should have been done before they left home. It's not worth the risk to try and squeeze a few extra miles.
