I prefer Garmin for the fact the settings menu is a little easier to navigate. If there comes a time when you need to poke some buttons while riding, its less dangerous. (not that any of us would do that)

I am going to agree with you here. Well Garmin is sending me a new replacement and it will be here today, we will see if theres a difference. To be safe I ordered a sun shade too.

If you still want to go the cheap but usable route, like me:

Cheapest Garmin I could find (Model 50LM at the time; on sale for $50)
Ram cradle and mount
Visor from glarestomper.com (really, really helps)
Powered via USB using products from 3BRpowersports.com

No, not as good as a motorcycle-specific GPS, but cheaper, and has lasted 3 years so far. I thought it would rattle itself to death in a month.

Not waterproof. It sits behind my Road King windshield. If I need to I just throw Ziploc bag over it.

I'm using a Nuvi 2509 and the screen is definitely better than my older Nuvi 665.

I agree. The 450's and 550's in my mind were better built units than the newer ones.

From the Garmin FAQ:

The zumo 400 and 500 series, 550, 600, and 665 devices are NOT compatible with routing in BaseCamp. These devices may appear to take a route without issue however, when navigating the route, an error message may appear. An alternate program to use is MapSource. First download the map to your computer, then use MapSource to create and transfer routes to your zumo.

I know it says that, but I've never had a problem importing a route from basecamp to my zumo. also, is mapsource even used/updated anymore? anytime I've tried to find something about it, I get redirected to basecamp....

That's funny cause my wife is always asking me where we are and I keep saying I don't
know! Yet some how we make it back home. It's about the ride not the destination, I'm getting on the bike to get lost.....

I have heard this over and over....so, you want to get lost? Get lost. Need a place to eat, sleep.....get gas or nearest hospital? Turn on the GPS.
If the gPS is connected by blue tooth to your phone, you can call for reservations (some emergency rooms get busy).
Traveling around a busy city, and don't know the exit or what lane to be in...get lost.
