Zumo 660(HD) since 2009! Would get a freeze up once in awhile but no big issues and I think Garmin fixed that with there updates. Pricey but I got at cost so wasn't that bad.

Good luck!

After a regular GPS and a smart phone I dropped the bucks on a Garmin 590 (Leather Up had a great sale).

Great to read in daylight, works with gloves, plays MP3 and streams to my helmet. Worth the price to me.

Garmin Zumo 390LM works great for me, TPMS is a plus.
If you want to cheap out, try Waze on your smart phone, I use both. I have a phone mount in my other vehicles, I run Waze all the time. A pretty cool free app.

I have used several GPS units over the years and have never been let down by a Garmin.

My current MC GPS is a Garmin car model, I waterproofed it with silicone and it has been going strong for more than a year. Here is the vid that helped me to do the mod:

I use a RAM claw mount on the handlebars, it is easy to move from bike to bike.

I stick with my iPhone on a RAM mount. Google Maps has brought back the "add a stop" feature that allows you to customize a trip a little better as well.

For trips where data is an issue I also use the free Maps.ME app which downloads the maps to the device. I was surprised at the amount of data available when searching for motels, camp sites and restaurants when I had no or expensive data connections. It also has some, if not all, the hiking trails for many of the US National Parks I visited this spring including The Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion.

I like the TomTom's better than the Garmin. The Garmin display is choppy and seems to lag more than the TomTom's display. I currently have the TomTom Rider but see that they have come out with a new model Rider 400 that looks a lot more sleek and less blocky than the Rider I have. I like the option that will calculate a winding route. The Ram mount that comes with it is stable and easily removed leaving only the ball clamped to the handlebars.

I have also had a cheap TomTom in ram mount. It worked great but as others have mentioned, it was hard to see and had to be removed in the rain.

I've observed over the years that folks generally follow this progression before landing in a place where they are satisfied with their GPS solution:

1. Go the cheap Nuvi route (not water proof, hard to see in direct sunlight, controls not motorcycle friendly)
2. Use the iPhone or some other device in some make-do mount (not waterproof, cant be seen in sunlight, will shut off if it gets too hot, small motorcycle-unfriendly controls)
3. Consider a Tom-Tom (waterproof, good mount, however no stateside service after the warranty period is over (hard to believe, right?)) Been there done that...never again.
4. Finally realize the Garmin motorcycle series of GPS units are what should have been bought in the first place.

Nothing is perfect, and of course we all know that Garmin has had their issues over the years. But for motorcycle specific functionality, they are very hard to beat considering the whole package, especially service after the sale from Garmin.

Garmin usually ends up on top of this discussion.

That being said, Inroute is a app for iPhone ( not sure if it's available for others ).

What's nice about Inroute is you can pick your starting point and destination. Adding waypoints will force it to take your route. Very easy to use and voice commands through speakers.

The wife and I did some traveling and we could pick our route in minutes before we left each morning, I don't even mount my phone to the bars. The voice commands are great and I can watch the map on the bike.

I realize you can use HD ride planner or Tyre but I need a PC or laptop with me to route and transfer the gpx file. One less thing to pack, more room.

With Inroute and Bluetooth I can pick my travel route for the day on my iPhone in minutes and I'm off. I can share the file with others too. Just a option for those interested.

I have a question for you 660 owners. I just bought a 6 month old 660 from a guy locally, he used it once blah blah blah. I notice the screen is hard to see in sunlight. It's still under warranty and Garmin said they would replace it but just wondering if anyone had any issues with theirs? I had some folks here say if you lined up 3 660's the screen will be different. I am at 100% contrast.
I had a 550 before that I wore out and that screen was visible in the deserts of the southwest, but this one is dim and difficult to see with sunglasses on. I wonder if the replacement will be better or worse, they say 10-14 days turn around. Any thoughts?
FWIW Garmin has always been #1!
