I have been reading this forum for 10 years now, I tend to remember things like this, and it is my opinion seeing what I have seen not only here, but in my own bike, and in bikes at my friends shop, that 20k is a good time to get them out. Sure you may get more miles out of them, bu you go by the worst case scenario and IMHO it is 20k inspect or replace.
check/inspect/replace is cheaper than trying to fish pieces of plastic out of the pan and oiling system, or doing a rebuild.
I did 509 gear drives after checking my crank runout and upgraded the cam plate and oil pump with Fueling parts, replaced the lifters and did adjustable push rods so I didn't have to pull the heads. The right side of my tc88 is pretty stout now, and I have great oil pressure, even hot and at hot idle. I did mine at 18K miles..better safe than sorry.

Its funny the wide range of mileage attained before replacement. Mine was checked every 10,000 abd finally replaced at 81,000 miles where I discovered the inner shoe cracked but still riding on the chain. That was Jan '11.
I installed gear drive 26's (already had the 95" big bore from the factory,) and now have 150,000 miles on that motor and haven't had a reason to peek inside that cam chest since. (God bless forged cranks and Timken lefty bearings too!)
