Default Protecting lower forks?

Just bought an '11 FLHTC this week, my 3rd touring bike.

The stock lowers always turn to krap on these bikes. Only 4,600 miles on this bike and I already see signs of them turning. What is the best way to prolong these to look good? Wax? Something else without abrasives in it?

constantly polish (eventually this won't work) or replace with chrome or powder coat

This. And you will have to have it redone after a while, but it protects your forks. I just LineX'd my whole bike. Haha

Chrome or powder coat or replace with some low mile take-offs every couple of years. Think I have 3 sets of take-offs on the shelf with anywhere from 5 miles to 1000 miles on them.

I thoroughly cleaned the forks with Flitz THEN I used a product called Shark Hyde. Its a little known product that an old timer turned me onto for my old ARE rims on my Vette. It works..
