Default Oil level check

Coming up on the 5k service on my 14 sgs and gonna do it myself with amsoil fluids. Quick question on checking the oil, probably a dumb one, on a hot oil check the level is exactly mid way on the dip stick, cold I think it is maybe an indent or two higher, is this correct or sound a bit low? I know not to fill to the full mark bc of blow by, but just want to be sure before I change the fluids soon, 14 sg should take 3 or 3.5 quarts on oil change?

Have you ever asked someone how to do something then after doing it you found out that person was wrong? The best way to avoid that in this case is to buy a manual. If you plan to do all future maintenance and repairs I'd advise you get the Service manual, Electrical Diagnostic Manual and Parts catalog. Around $130 for all three at Kutters Online store.

Here's a few pages from the service manual to show what you'd get: Notice the asterisk near oil capacity, 4 qts it states add 3 Qts run until warm and add as needed.
Good Luck

Its always best to start with less then add if needed. The manual say mine takes 3.5qt but 3 is just perfect.

i dont go by the cold check anymore. i go by the hot check and my ultra has less ticking noises and runs smoother especially when on a hot day. someone on this forum who works with heavy equipment explained the whole dry/wet sump thing and it made sense. hot check is the more important check IMO. when i pour in 3 quarts exactly the oil is exactly were in needs to be with a hot check and i get no blow by or any oil coming out my air cleaner even if the cold check is past the halfway mark on the dip stick.

You are approaching the 5000 mile service and haven't compared a hot and cold level your self in that time? Check your level before you ride, then check after the ride and get the answer for YOUR machine. On an oil change with filter change 3 quarts is good. Ride the bike a mile or two and adjust the level as necessary if necessary, hot or cold as you prefer.

I put 3 1/2 quarts in my s.g. oil spitting out of air filter for 3weeks. Sorry I did that. Sucked out about a 1/3 of a quart last night. All better today. Guess I'll be doing 3 quarts in the future.

3 quarts, done! Hot check shows a little over half way up the dipstick.
