I haven't seen a Harley manual but I'm sure it's better than the Clymer. I have been very disappointed in the Clymer. If it didn't come with the bike I wouldn't have bought it. I'll get some Harley manuals asap.

General consensus seems to be to ride it a little while and keep an eye on the magnetic plug. I can pull the plug, put my finger over the drain hole and check the plug and only lose a dribble of oil. If the plug is clean it goes back in, if its got chips like in the pic I'll drain the oil and remove the cover. Then probably be back here with pics of the inside...
Thanks to all for the help. I was afraid the bike had to be parked immediately. That would not have made me happy.

Those little chips as someone mentioned earlier are probably from the starter / ring gear engagement. That little gear jumps out into the ring gear and spins. Sometimes the motor kicks back against it (not a pleasant sound btw,) and little stuff s you saw might happen. Its a cost of doing business with that primary set up and doesn't effect longevity for most folks. (Mine's going on 16 years now.)

Hit the nail right on the head, IMO.

Those of you talking about cam tensioners might be in the wrong thread? He didn't ask what he should be worried about, he asked what was up with his primary fluids and chunks of material on the primary magnet.

Nice of you to give him a heads up about the cam tensioners, but that isn't the issue here.

Cam shoes are engine oil, not primary unless there is a really bad seal that would let debris get through.

No cam chain tensioners won't show in the primary. That bike has eaten a primary chain tensioner or a compensator/stator..Change it, watch it and change it again in a few hundred miles. If it's running OK the only other way to tell for sure is to remove the primary cover and take a look.

Umm....>> I'm afraid that the cam tensioners are down to the metal and disintegrating. Would debris from the cam chain tensioners show up in the primary oil? If that's not it what else could it be?

He did ask about the cam parts..;-)
