The biggest cost item was the clutch assembly. Depending on your dealer and shop rates, this could be less. Or if you try it yourself the price would come way down.

OP -- I want to bring something else to the discussion. My very ugly whirring sound occurred when in neutral -- whether clutch was pulled or not -- but went away when shifted into 1st and clutch pulled. I'm dealing with this now. My IPB is fine. Instead I have a bad output shaft bearing. See https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...-your-ipb.html

Good luck.

Thx jefla ... very interesting read ... I will have to check again tonight but I believe my noise goes away when I pull in the clutch in neutral ... doesn't have to go into to gear .... so if I'm reading right it would IPB is the problem .... I admire you guys that have the time and gumption to tear apart your primaries ... I have neither .
Gonna call my dealer today ... see if their is any sympathy and what the cost would be ... if that doesn't go well ... I know a few local indy s I'm gonna contact and be done with these dealers ... I've paid big money for all the services and maintenance from dealers ... this should not happen at 28000 to me or anybody ... not for what you pay for them ... it really bugs me a simple bearing on this bike can cost you so much ...

I must say I, too, do not have the guts to dive real deep into the primary, and no chance I'm tackling the trans.

Excellent post Dr. Tiki! Hopefully I can find it when mine fails again. First time was under warranty. Yes, the symptoms are an IPB for sure.

I was just dealing with a whirling noise coming from my primary, after getting myself prepared to tear into the primary again, I noticed that my rear shift linkage was loose, tighten it up and no more noise. I would check for a loose bolt somewhere before tearing the primary apart.

I also have the noise but it is when slowing down in gear even with the clutch pulled in when I shift to neutral it goes away. I have 80k on an 07 RK. And whatever it is I will do the work my self . Once I figure it out or when it finally fails whichever comes first . Any incite is helpfully thanks for your input.

When doing this repair i suggest upgrading the compensator to the SE or you'll have the same issue down the road i guarantee.

Thx ... I'm gonna look into that ... I found a reputable indy that used to be a Dealer mechanic to look at my bike .... he can't get to it for a couple of weeks yet ... depending on what he finds I want to replace anything to keep from doing this again anytime soon ....
