Default How do you know when to change shock oil?

OK, Fork Oil .. not shock oil ...

I've replaced my shock oil several times, mainly to go by the schedule and to try and see how different weights affect the ride.

Well, I got about 60K on the oil since the last change. I'm really starting to feel every bump and it seems like the entire bike rattles. I got 122K on the Road King now.

I want it to ride like new but can't really expect that.

Was hoping somebody could tell me that old shock oil causes the clunky ride. I just replaced the front motor mount. Maybe its something else?

Did a 600 mile trip yesterday ... it felt good on smooth roads which is rare around here.

Hmm! I never had to change the oil in a shock.I've changed the oil in the front forks per the manual or when I wanted a different feel in the ride.

Shock oil? I've never changed it. Never heard of anyone else changing it either.

There is no Harley maintenance schedule for changing shock oil, as Harley considers the shock unserviceable. At 60k, the oil may not even be there any longer, let alone broken down. So change it, tune it, and enjoy it. There are numerous threads on changing shock oil. Both here in this forum, and many others.

So easy to do just do it. I used some synthetic ATF in mine what a difference from stock.I was going to try some shock therapy or different fluids but am so pleased with the ATF I never bothered. Read up on it and try something .

Its time to replace your shocks with something from a 3rd party, all of which are better than stock, and front springs with monotubes.

I replaced my shock oil with 15W a year or so ago...I don't expect to change it regularly. It is not required.
