Default Rough idle when warm, 09 Street Glide

Greetings all,

I have an 09 SG with the 96 CI engine. No internal engine mods, but do have the SE air cleaner and slip on's, along with EXIEDs. The bike has 42k miles on it.

Early last year I noticed an idle issue after the bike has been run, completely warmed up, and shut off. When I start it (while it is still warm) again, it starts right up, but then settles down into a rough idle where the RPM's go from 500-1100. It will often stall. When I start riding with minimal throttle, the engine surges and lugs, and will stall if I don't rev the engine. Once the bike gets past 1st gear, it is usually okay and the problem doesn't appear again until the bike gets turned off and started again while still warm. I have no cold start issues.

I changed the idle temperature sensor and it is still exhibiting the same issue.

Anyone else have the same or a similar issue that can offer some advice of what I should do next?

Thanks in advance for your help.

any codes? check engine light on? Have you checked for a vacuum leak? Is there black smoke from exhaust? Have you disconnected and cleaned the throttle body harness on the bike? (spray wire connector cleaner on both, and then use dielectric grease). After all that, You could have a bad map sensor, but it usually leaves a code, and a ck engine light.

- I guess that's a typo and should read "intake" and not "idle".

It sounds like a sticky Idle Speed Control valve (ISC), which can usually be corrected by taking it off and cleaning it with carb cleaner.

09 has drive by wire and uses throttle housing to control Idle, doesn't have Idle valve solenoid like the earlier bikes do

Is the IAC the same as the idle valve solenoid?

Idle Air Control valve and Idle Speed Control valve are the same thing.

Thanks. Now I know. Never had TBW so this is new territory for me.

I haven't come across it on bikes yet, but my company car, Ford Fusion has it - I'm sure all FI systems will be that way soon.

As @harleycharlie1992 points out, the fly by wire systems don't use the ISC / IAC.

No check engine light.

Have you checked for a vacuum leak?

No. I don't know how/where to start with that.

Is there black smoke from exhaust?

No.

I have not.

I appreciate the replies. I have scoured the service manual for causes and fixes, but am really coming up empty. I will research all of your suggestions and start working on them to find/eliminate the cause.

It sounds like an intake leak.

Take WD40 and spray it around the intake seals while the bike is running. Any change in idle/sound (like it speeds up or engine breaks up) and you'll know you have an intake leak.
