Although it's an interstate, I've been on 68, west of Cumberland, in the car & always thought it could be a beautiful ride on the bike. I plan to do some WV riding this year, and I'll go to Cumberland from upstate PA to get there. There wasn't much traffic either --- not "heavy" traffic, I mean. There might be on 79 heading south to where I wanna go in WV, but I'll put up with it for awhile, to get where I wanna go.

I think we have a plan: Head out Thursday night after work and stop over in Leesburg, VA. Next Day ride up rt 50 towards Grafton, WV. Hop on rt 219 and head through the Monohela National Forest and end up in Lewisburg, WV. Next morning head east and jump on the bottom of Skyline drive and head to Front Royal then head back home Sunday morning. I googled rt 50 in WV and 219 and the pictures I saw remind me of the BRP. We are just looking to get away maybe with another couple or just us and take a nice scenic relaxing ride.

Anybody know this route? I have been on Skyline a few times but never 50 in WV or 219.

I've ridden on US 50 west of Winchester...it's a pretty nice road...quite rural out there. If you stop over in Leesburg, you might try the King's Court tavern, which is a nice place to get a meal and a pint.

FYI, your route takes you along 7 and picks up 50 further west; there's currently a bit of construction going on on Rt. 7 west of Leesburg, but once you get past it (beyond Hamilton/Purcellville), 7 itself is fairly respectable riding. In any case, 50 is pretty miserable near D.C., so best to avoid it until you get further west.

One other thing...if you are willing to pay the toll, 267 is a better way to get to Leesburg from the beltway than Rt. 7 (heavy traffic...lots of stop-lights).

I'm going to be out that way myself on Sat. I think you will enjoy those roads and I second the comment about using the Dulles Toll road from the 495 beltway out to Leesburg. Might as well get to the better riding faster. Between the beltway and Leesburg is some of the heaviest traffic, especially the first 10-20 miles, in the area. You'd be going through a lot of commercial space.
