If you cannot find a tool, or if you find that the race walked on the shaft towards the trans where you can no longer use the tool, get a dremel and cut a notch on the outside of the race (takes 1 minute) and then hit the notch with a chisel and dead blow hammer. It will crack and slide right off.
Is it possible to install the race without the installation tool? What I understand is it has to be put on the shaft in a certain spot and needs the tool for this purpose.

Yes. Just measure where the old one sits and use a properly sized deep well socket and the dead blow to install the new race. It will go smooth and slow so you'll have plenty of time to measure your progress.
Before you really get into this, research Baker's sealed bearing solution. Might work on yours.
With a sealed bearing there is no race it's all one piece no service. You cut the old race off the trans shaft. Install sealed bearing into primary and done. And like mentioned above no need for the specialty tool
Cut the old race off with a Dremel and chisel.I heated the race in a small deep fryer , tapped it in place with a hammer and socket. Used a portable ball joint press from a mechanic friend for the primary bearing
