Default Compensator - Stator

I just had Bossier HD replace my compensator last week under the ESP. When I was riding home, I noticed that the volt meter was lower than normal so today, I took it back to HD. They're telling me the stator is now bad. Being a suspicious kind of guy, I'm wondering if the tech could have messed up the stator when he was replacing the compensator. Not a big deal, $50 deductible with the ESP, but I don't want to pay for the tech's mistake. The service writer says that the stator isn't disturbed by a comp replacement. I thought that the comp and stator are on the same shaft. Do I have a reason to be suspicious, or is the service writer correct?

Thanks

David

I don't think the Tec did any thing wrong. 2012 had a recall on voltage reg. Your stator may be fine.

Yep, I know. Regulator was replaced 10k ago. What I'm trying to determine is if the tech screwed up the stator getting to the compensator.

Thanks

That is possible, you can knick the stator putting the rotor on, but how would you prove it?

Plus, stators do fail sometimes and you can't see a thing physically wrong with them.

Ok, thanks. I guess I'll just have to trust the dealer..

if all the magnets are intact then you'll have to go with what they say - using an impact gun on the nut has been known to loosen a magnet or two...

Weird....when the dealer replaced my Compensator on a 2010 Street Glide, I asked why they replaced my stator as well? Didn't really care, had ESP still the same deductible, was told by the service writer that ESP always pays to replace the stator when changing the compensator, sort of a preventative thing.
Guess different dealers handle it differently.

Changing the compensator on a '12 shouldn't require removing the rotor so the stator wouldn't even be seen, let alone fiddled with. One of the problem areas in the service business is exactly what happened to you, a failure that just happens to coincide with work being done. There is also no guaranty that your blaming the stator is correct, may indeed be another VR failure or a dirty or loose connection.

If your VR was not replaced, it could have been went out.
It is a known problem for the 12's and you should be covered under warranty for that still, as if I am not mistaken that may be a recall?

Beak - I also thought that the stator was replaced with a compensator change. Perhaps the difference is that you had yours done under factory warranty and not ESP? ESP company is probably a little more hard nosed than the moco. As it turns out, they should have done it. It was immediately apparent as I was riding home from getting the compensator fixed that there was something wrong with the charging system. So the ESP company gets to pay for a complete primary tear down....again.

btsom - That's good to know since that's what the service writer told me. "Honesty points" are always welcome. Still seems like a coincidence, but they do happen. You're right, it could still be the VR.

lion - The voltage regulator was replaced under the mfg warranty about a year ago. It could still be a VR, but they've called me and said it was the stator.

Thanks, guys. I do appreciate the information.
