Default DK External Breather systems. Filter or no?

My DK kit came with a small filter that I was using on the end of the breather hose. My tuner (The Dyno Difference in Dallas) said I'd be better off without the filter and just venting to the ground. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

I put one on my home made one. It can't hurt plus nothing can go into it this way.

How exactly do these systems work compared to other air filters without these little filters on them?.....what's the difference...ryan

Won't make much difference either way. Some say the filter will keep the vent hose from leaving a drip underneath when the bike is parked.
But sooner or later even that little filter will fill up and drip.

In answer to ryan9977: These set-ups vent the crankcase to atmosphere instead of into the throttle body. The idea is to stop hot, oil laden air from entering the combustion process. Some say a motor vented this way will actually make a bit more power because it's getting cooler air.

Filter is unnessicary. If the breathers are in good shape they only blow, not suck. If ya are worried about oil drips, use a catch can.

I used a filter simply because I didn't want anything crawling up there and plugging it...

Don't know if it's an issue here in Texas, but in Virginia the mud daubers were bad to plug small hoses up.

I take my filter off a couple times a year and wash it, have never had a oil drip, a little oil does accumulate in it but would take a very long time to drip, thats what I see in mine, if you over fill with engine oil it is more likely to drip.

I made my own external breather on my softail similar to the DK kit. Out of curiosity I didn't install a filter and just ran the tube towards the ground. Several thousand miles later no drips. I keep the oil level no more than @ the 1/2 way mark. Also live in the hot humidity south and occasionally blast the throttle.
