Hey David,

You do not necessarily have to have the filter on. However, it is a good idea this way you don't have to worry about any oil dripping or anything plugging up the hose

Our Breather Systems vent externally, this way all the hot, dry, oily air doesn't get back in, as most other air cleaners route all of the hot, dry, oily air back in.
