Default Stock Oil Pressure Gauge Reading

I'm asking this strictly out of curiousity. AFTER getting up to full operating temperature, where does your stock oil pressure guage read? Mine settles in just a tickpast the 32 psi reading, which on my '06 Ultra is at TDC. When I pull off and come to a full stop but still idling, it drops to about halfway between zero and 32 psi.

The factory pump is 10-40 psi. Yours sounds like mine 10 psi idling 40 on the road.

Hold onto your hat after stoping and at idle when it gets hot. It will drop to 5psi on the gauge and it looks like its on zero, but its normal.

Dave,

I figured it was normal for it to drop that much at idle (when hot), but I guess that I really never paid that much attention. After changing mylubes last night to synthetics, I was paying particular attention to the gauge today and wanted tofind outwhat others were seeing. Sounds like I'm running pretty much at 'par.'

On very hot days mine has dropped down to 4-5 psi at idle.

As already mentioned, it may shock you on one hot day in traffic when the gauge looks like it is at zero. It isn't, but probably close, and it is normal. The only parts that require oil pressure on the HD engine are the lifters, and going down to almost zero is normal when hot. Mine also stays a tick above 32 when warmed-up and cruising.

The pressure relates to temperature, so if you have an oil-temp gauge you can watch one go up, and the other goes down, and versie vicie.

That's been my experience too. My SG just went in for its 1K service this morning, and I asked about it. They said that with the synthetic fill it will get today, it will probably maintain a slightly higher psi on hot idle - but not much higher.

With our Arizona summers, I look for it to stay low when it's reeeal hot [:@]

exactly what I see as well.... good pressure showing at cold-start.... in the middle (around 32) when running hot and virtually showing 0 when hot-idling.

I was going to ask that question one of these days..... glad to see RanD did it first.
