gas tank fill question
#21
I put the nozzle all the way in the tank at the start just to confirm if the pump auto-shutoff is working (don't ask me why :-)). If the auto-shutoff isn't working, I want to know before the tank is full. Then I raise the nozzle a little more and keep fueling until the pump clicks off. I may do this 2-3 times. Eventually, the nozzle is near the top of the hole and the tank is full.

New owner question so yes I will accept some friendly ribbing for this question but it really bothers me.
I have an 08 Ultra. The fill hole in the tank is barely big enough for the nozzle let alone to be able to monitor how full the tank is getting. The three little breather holes are a joke. My bud has a 89 Ultra and that thing has a filler neck like my pickup. He can see plenty well when it is getting full before it pukes all over his tank. Now sometimes I get a station where the pump can be controlled to flow slowly and sometimes it is on or off.
Tips on technique or modification is welcome. I am seriously considering taking the tank off and drilling the whole thing larger but with these injected machines (and mine isn't stock) I understand it can have an impact.

When I fill up, I turn the engine off, get ready to insert the nozzle, turn it back to the "on" position (NOT STARTING IT, OF COURSE) and pump away until I see the needle get to a little past 3/4 full. Then, turn back to off, raise the nozzle just enough to see down in the tank and slowly fill until I see the gas near the top.

what i try to do is get a gas station towel and put it over most of the opening
What is a "gas station towel"? If you are referring to one of those brown paper towels that you dry your hands with after taking a public restroom dump; they will scratch your finish toot suite.
I think you people are overthinking this...what's wrong with pulling the nozzle out every few seconds & you can visullay see after a couple times how quickly it is filling. Then...DUH!...stop it before it gets too full.
I don't worry about this 'cause I buy non-ethanol gas in bulk & fill with a gas can & a funnel. Easy peasy/Awesome sauce!
