the bikes are delivered in boxes on platforms. the driver never sees the actual bike. the dealer opens the box and inspects the bike then signs off for the driver. if the fender was bent when you got the bike it happend at the stealership or they missed it upon inspection. i ran a harley store for 3 years. we had very few damaged bikes from the factory

I think Harley stopped using the outer box a few years ago. Now they just have the bike in a metal pallet with a plastic bag over the bike. See here.

I worked for a deferent brand. We took a few off the trucks with damage, even a few that were totaled. I saw one once that was shipped up side down. The straps let go and it was a mess. We didn't even take it off the truck. The driver was not happy.

When I was at the York plant I watched each bike that came off the line go thru a dyno check out, then it was put on a specially designed pallet and loaded into trailer. The pallets are designed to keep the bikes from touching each other. So, as long as the bikes were properly secured on their respective pallets the damage was probably done when it was loaded/unloaded.

However, the receiving dealer would be the one that would be responsible for making it right for the customer.

THIS is how it is; except the bag is a cotton-type cloth.
I just watched the dealer unload my '15 Street Bob 2 weeks ago.
They had 5 bikes on the truck; CVO Street Glide, Heritage Classic, A Deluxe,
a Fugly and my 'Bob.

thats a shame they did away with the box. i ran the harley store here for 2 1/2 years and we had very very few bikes with damage. we did get some boxes that were damaged but no bikes. i would bet that with them just having a dust cover over them there will be more damage from the shippers
