Rain suits

To me a high quality rain suit is one of the first purchases that needs to be made if you plan to ride long distances. I bought the HD Incinerator 2 piece that now runs about $235. The only criticism that I have is the zippers on the sides that make it easy to put on and take off (and get over your boots) aren't heavy duty and the first time I put it on, one of the zippers pulled apart. The rain suit still worked but at the price, I expected better than that. Good news is that HD stood behind the product and my local dealer traded it out for a completely new one even though I hadn't bought it through them (bought it at another dealership hours away). I agree with the purchase of 'gators' - they've saved my feet on several occasions. Also agree with getting a size that fits over your normal riding gear however don't go too big or you'll have lots of drag on it riding at higher speeds.

I got some gators off Ebay for about $20. What a great way to spend 20 bucks. When the road is wet but the rain has stopped they really work to keep your feet and lower legs dry.
I also have HD rain gear, like others have said they work well, they don't melt on the pipes and if the weather turns cold they help keep you warm.

Also +1 on everything above. Use the hood cuz it keeps dribble out of your back. The HD one I use goes on easily over boots.
If you become hesitant and wait too long, and end up facing rain without the rain suit, go into any drug store, sporting goods store, Walmart, etc and but the $8 special plastic rain suit.
You will marvel at how they flap about your legs after they shred and melt :-)

The problem for me on the off-the-shelf 2-piece rain suites is the pants is almost always a half a foot too long for us shorter fellas. I decided to get a good waterproof textile overprants with Gore-Tex that fit me. I also use a great hiking/mountaineering Gore-Tex shell that I've used for a few years. I've been using this combo on many rainy rides and have been completely dry each time. I can pack both to almost nothing and can easily fit inside my FF helmet.

I rode 200 miles in heavy rain on one of my trips once, stayed dry, as we all know nothing worse then having cold rain go down the front of your chest to your crotch, then down you legs just to fill up your boots.
To me, it kinda takes all the fun out of riding!
