What to know about 03 Road King

Gotcha. I appreciate the info👍. Living in the mountains and 4 hours from the bigger towns on CL that's always the trouble. Do I spend the money to travel and hotel to look at bikes of do I pay a little more on nice bike close to home. He will negotiate a little but definitely no 8500. Guy has 4 nice bikes and big bucks. He don't care to sell or keep forever. And there's always find a cheaper one and spend the money on all the goodies after.

lotta bikes for sale, you'd do well to come to the Valley and kick a bunch of tires, that'll help you determine which model you like and which general year range you want

Almost no difference between '03-'05 tourers. 88", 5 speed, just different colors. I wouldn't spend close to $12k on one. Finally sold my '00 RK for $7300 but it took me 4 years to find a buyer. Got my ''09 for $11k a few years ago. My brother paid $9500 for his very nice '09 RK. '09 up bikes are much better. Just stay away from '07-'08 ones.

my 03 RK Classic
Love mine, owned it since new and still only have about 26k on ot. The only thing I changed on mine was I went to hard bags, as the leather over plastic start to sag after a while. PLUS I wanted bags that locked I kept the old bags tho as may help when and if I ever sell it. One other thing is I have had to occasionally remove the front calipers and shoot brake cleaner in them and loosen up the pistons as after while I lose brake handle resistance, and it is because the pistons are not retracting. I think this is common issue. I usually do it right before I take in for yearly inspection.

I think I'll just ride down Saturday to cave creek hang out and see a few bikes. Is the market really soft on HD right now? I actually thought these. bike's would sell fast at these prices. Found another 03 guys has over 50k in asking $11 with a 103. There are some stockers from 00-09 with 40-50k miles in the 8-9 range but I think I'd rather spend a little more on one with with all the goodies and low miles. .

'03 EFI it is not a matter of if, but when the internal fuel tank pressure line develops pinholes from rubbing on the inside of the tank tunnel.
Speed sensors were a problem, first symptom is erratic idle and motor dying when coming to a stop. Replace sensor.
Check IAC pintle hole, keep it cleaned out with carb cleaner. Hunting idle is a symptom of dirty IAC.
Check front motor mount for tears. If in good condition leave it alone as the upgrade new ones are a harder rubber and the bike will vibrate more at idle.

Have had my '03 EFI since new with about 25k miles. I am doing a major engine mod just because, it was running fine. I consider the fuel hose part of the regular filter maintenance since I don't ride that much and we have such crappy fuel. As mentioned the front calipers are problematic with sticky pistons. The fix is to install the Brembos. I added a tour pack to mine and have rarely removed it. I did add Progressive 444 shocks with the HD springs. 6'5"/260 and they helped a lot. There are probably better available but at higher cast. I like this bike a lot. I'm 61 and will probably keep it until I quit riding. You really can't go wrong with any RK with the Delphi system. Good luck.

I traded this 03 in October (16k miles). Dealer gave me $9500 and I kept the fairing and the matching tourpack (not pictured). It had a 95" kit in it and 203 cams, apes, cast wheels and a bunch of chrome.
I bought the bike for 11k 2 years earlier. IMO - 12k is too much for that bike. 7500-8500 max as its only got an 88" motor.

I love my 03. I have an 03 and an 07 Road King. I ride them both about equally. The 07 is more of a Hot Rod and the 03 is my tourer. As mentioned an 88 is a great motor if you upgrade the cams and do the tensioner upgrade. I also have the Brembo upgrade on mine.
I gave 12K for my 03 last year. I know ift was too much but it is chromed out like a CVO and had everything I wanted already installed and was in immaculate condition. It had 21K miles on it. It all depends on how much you want the bike. I really wanted the one I bought.
I would start out and offer 10K for the one your looking at and depending on how bad you want it negotiate from there. Yeah you can find cheaper bikes, but is it what you want is the key.
