You might look into the Akoury AK-88. I have one, and they are very low profile compared to the other half helmets I have owned and seen. They have a nice quick release catch on them making it easy on/off, and are comfortable.
They are also DOT, although few DOT helmets are actually tested and provide the data.
It is definitely not a novelty helmet.

Here is the best price I have found on them, and more information can be found on the Akoury website.

If you need your brain for your job, why would you risk it in a helmet that may not protect it.

DOT is done my the manufacturers, although you can contact cycle dynamics and ask if they have tested the helmet that was suggested. Looking at it I would not trust the retention system, I bet they come off easily!

What you must know when choosing a helmet is that it meets minimum safety standards. The way to find a well-made, reliable helmet is to look for the DOT and/or Snell sticker on the inside or outside of the helmet. The sticker means the helmet meets the safety test standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and/or the Snell Memorial Foundation.

Each organization has rigid procedures for testing:

Impact – the shock-absorbing capacity of the helmet.
Penetration – the helmet's ability to withstand a blow from a sharp object.
Retention – the chin strap's ability to stay fastened without stretching or breaking.
Peripheral vision – the helmet must provide a minimum side vision of 105 degrees to each side. (Most people's usable peripheral vision is only about 90 degrees to each side.)

Simple physics, less impact absorption = more brain damage.

Looks like the AK-88 will cover what you want. How 'bout the rest of your head?

This. One thing though...they seem to be supplied from mostly Canadian firms. I'd bet the DOT standards are different. Still, Akoury is among the smallest DOT helmets.
