Default About to buy a Road King

EDIT: Road King is mine now. Few photos in post #30

I will be finalizing my purchase of a new superior blue Road King this week.

It will be a shame to see my Fat Bob go, but with the gf, doing more two-up riding and traveling it makes sense.

I thought about a few of the other touring models with the creature comforts, but I love the cruiser look.

I had Vance and Hines Big Shots on the Fat Bob. Any suggestions on pipes for the RK?

First off, congrats on the new ride. You will love it I am sure. I know I do mine, I too like the classic cruiser look as I am not a fairing guy at all.

You will get many opinions on exhaust, but I am very happy with my V&H power duals with Rinehart 4". Very deep throaty sound, and roar like hell when opened up. some think it too loud, but I don't at all.

If this is a new bike, I'd suggest you leave it stock and warranty compliant for the time being.

you can use that time to go hear other bikes and weigh the pluses and minuses.

for instance you are hot to tour distances now...louder pipes are no fun 3 hours into an 8 hour riding day...

and some of us have had real problems with certain aftermarket headers hitting on rt hand turns.

Definite difference in the two models and for longer distance I think you will really like the RK. Much better two up riding. With what you had on your FatBob and No radio to worry about on the RK you have lots of choices. I run V&H Big Radius on my RK and really enjoy the sound of those.

Mike, I am guessing you are referring to the power duals scraping on right had turns, but I have never had an issue in thousands of miles. I also push the curves and corners fairly hard at times.
I have however heard some complain of this issue and seen pics of it, but it has always been on SGs with the shorter rear shocks or on a bike that has been lowered. I personally have never heard of one scraping on a stock height RK, but I suppose anything is possible. Looking at the lean angle on my RK, I can't see any way the header would drag before the boards. The boards on my bike do have a few marks on them though ha.

I am definitely not pushing the power duals as exhaust is an individual choice. But I wanted to throw my personal experience out there for the OP on that header.

the floorboards will swivel "up" if they contact the pavement...controls are designed that way for safety

If the cover on your X pipe contacts, it can relieve traction from the rear tire.

right hand turns, where the suspension compresses in the turn, more likely on a lowered bike

Welcome to seeing the world as we know it with a superior blue RK. If you enjoy yours 1/2 as much as I enjoy mine, you will never go back, instead you will enjoy the memories while making new ones on the RK. You can kiss the large pipes, I occasionally have kissed my right 4" jackpot. Two up and aggressive. Sometimes conditions are such that it just happens and it always brings a big smile to my face.

Congratulations on your new ride!! RK's are the best bike HD makes in my opinion. Touring comfort and performance, gorgeous looks. I have Rush slip on pipes, 1.75" baffles. For me, not too loud and not too quiet. I'm really happy with them.
