I bought a starter rebuilt kit online. It cost me around $25 dollars and another $10 for the primary side gasket. I was able to rebuilt the starter in my den looking at video on youtube. A new starter was like $350 from Harley I would go with a Chinese one for our bikes. if you don't want to try the rebuilt kit on your own look starter rebuilt shops in your are the will charge you anywhere from $75-$125 to do it for you. It was not that hard to do really.

Buy a HD Manual if you plan on doing your own work. Do a google search.

There are 3 bolts holing it, plus the exhaust grounding bracket...make sure you take pictures...specially the cables, make sure you disconnect the battery. Might want to also take the maxi fuse out as well. I did it this past summer on my 07 FLHTC . Not that hard, you might have to do something with the exhaust or not...

Probably just the starter clutch if it still tries to turn over and "kicks out", I have an '07 with 58k on it and am on my 3rd one. About $125.00 from the stealer...
