Looking for advice on installing SE255s in stock 96 46k miles
I have a 2011 Electra Glide. 46,000 miles on the clock. As far as I know, bone stock engine. The bike was a rental from NY state. I bought it in July with 42k on it.
Current setup:
96" stock motor
Cycle visions MoFlow intake
Freedom Performance true dual head pipes
Freedom Performance American Outlaw 4.5" Slip Ons
Power Commander 5.
I'm swapping the rocker boxes and cam cover out from chrome to black. I am considering doing a cam upgrade since I'll already be in there. I want low end torque. HP numbers don't mean much to me. I just want some more get up and go. I ride 2 up a lot. I have been pretty happy with the performance since adding the intake and exhaust. I burnt the clutch up in it immediately after installing. Trying to find a set of takeoff or a used SE255's. It seems to be the go to "budget" cam for baggers. I know as long as the pushrods aren't bent i can reuse them. Besides bearings, gaskets, o-rings, etc. what else should i do or look for while it's apart? Should I go ahead and replace the lifters?
I'm not trying to sink a small fortune into this. I appreciate any input.
I wasn't planning to do any of this this winter, but everything is subject to change...

I have put the 255 cams in a couple of 96" baggers. It is a good set up. Be sure to upgrade to the Torrington inner cam bearings. Will need to borrow a tool for that job.
Also be sure to get it tuned properly. The two I did used the PCV and it worked fine.
As you said, stock pushrods are fine for this swap.

Do you know if there's a tune for the PCV that will get me close? I'm having a hard time finding anyone to tune it. The closest dealer that will work on it with a PCV, I wouldn't trust to re-lace my boots. I found an Indy but he's a good distance from me. One dealer I talked to the guy said he could try to tune the pcv. When I mentioned putting dual maps in so I could have a power tune and an econo tune, he said huh? I didn't know you could do that. Then suddenly he remembered the dino was down. I called a few days later and talked to another guy. He said if you got a power commander you don't need a dino tune. I gave up on them. All the other dealers within 2 hrs drive won't touch a pcv and only want to sell you a SE tuner.

I'm going to do a SE255 cam "upgrade" on my '07 Ultra this winter. I have 44K on the bike.
Already have the cam (eBay for $100 and new bike take-off.)
Got a deal on Zippers dual piston cam chain tensioners so they are also going in. I expect the stock tensioners will be fine but it's just an upgrade while I'm in there.
Also using the SE Perfect Fit push rods. Solid and fits the 255 cam without adjusting (nothing to come loose). Suppose to be stronger and lighter. The local H-D dealer uses them on their cam installs.
Will be using the down-load 812-036 for my 255 cam
I'm already using 812-007 for my bike. Been in there for 7 years and works fine. (Have 70.34 HP and 81.85 Torque with this set-up. SE mufflers and SE air cleaner.)
Went Iowa to California without a problem.
Interesting how trips to the coast in the 4-wheelers w/FI (3 different vehicles) all had problems in the mountains.
I whizzed through the mountains with a loaded bike without a problem. Over the mountains and into the desert before I knew it.
New 812-036 might be a shade rich but that can be adjusted.
It's for SE mufflers & SE aircleaner w/255 cam but 103 flat top pistons.
My pistons are staying stock.
Getting new Torrington cam bearing upgrade ($20). They are cheap, do it.
I have the PC3 and my closest tuner for the PC3 is in Ames, IA at Zylstra H-D.
They charge a flat $300, no matter how long it takes.
My son lives 1/2 mile away so I can combine a tune while visiting if needed.
You can go to the Power Commander web site and find a tuner. I called them and they told me where to go. It didn't pop-up so I had to call.
It'll be a while before I find out how it will be.
Winter and snow.
From what I've read, the 255 cam works well with the 96 engine.
I want torque. I bought a trailer but have yet to use it. Cracked a bone in the ankle last year so very little riding.

I recently did 255s in my 07 SG. As said above, upgrade the inner bearings. I used stock pushrods and didnt mind the extra work. Get the shim set just in case. I didnt and had to run to the dealer who happened to have the one I needed. Dont forget the assembly lube either. Its a good project and the results were worth the time. I found a new unused set on ebay for 125. Just have to keep looking.

Thanks guys.
I picked up a set of se255s from a forum member for $125 shipped to my door. I spent the afternoon yesterday getting gasket kits, bearings, tensioner shoes, o-rings, bearing removal/install tool, cam gear locking tool, assembly lube, lifters, and some other stuff ordered. I referred to my service manual, and an online parts fiche to verify I got everything I need coming. Like always everyone was very helpful. Thanks again.

40,000 miles on a set of 255's in my '10 RK. Original owner put 'em in at 3,000 miles, along with 103 cylinders,hi comp pistons, big K&N,with Freedom Performance 4 1/2 in. slip ons. Made a whole different animal out of it. You'll love the cams, two up,plenty of *** hauling torque.Find a dyno guy who knows what the hell he is doing. A Power Commander should let him dial it in on the nuts. But forget the dual map deal, not worth it.
