I installed mine last night. It appears to be a K&N filter although Arlen Ness is stamped on the front. Yes; you occasionally have to clean and oil them rather than replace with new.

No expert here but there is a K&N maintenance kit you can buy which would have everything you need. It should work.

4X4 shops should have the K&N Filter Recharge kits, basicly you take the filter off rinse it out from the inside out (this is so you arnt driving the dirt further into the filter) then spray the cleaner on it let it soak for a minute or two, then rinse it out again from the inside out, then let it dry. Then you re oil it using the spray oil, its red so you can see where you sprayed it, let it soak in of r awhile then wipe it off and put it back in. Clean and re oil every oil change or every other oil change. Or anytime the filter looks dirty. While your at that off road store go ahead and buy a K&N filter for your cage and save yourself some bucks and get a bit more power out of your car. A reuseable filter is good for LOTS and LOTS of miles. 50,000-100,000 milesdepending on your conditions.

you can get the K&N oil in a spray can from the HD dealer or any MC shop.
Basically, wash it, let it dry, spray the oil. The oli, conditions the element plus traps any very small dust particles. My lawnmower has the same type of AC filtration system...not a K&N but a filter that requires oiling.

you can get the re-charge at Autozone.... The filter is HD-0800 I just picked up a second one. That way when one is clean and drying I can put in the other and keep riding. As for cleaning they nailed it.... spray wash let air dry, spray oil.....
