I only ever owned a new shovel, back in the 70s, which despite rumours was fine for 40k+ miles. As a newcomer to Harleys you may be surprised and pleased to know that they still sell factory service manuals, so get one as an essential guide to servicing etc. It will answer many of your questions.

If it starts and you can ride it down the road it is worth $3k even missing the bags and windshield. The title and motor and tranny alone may be worth it.
