Default charging system upgrade tips

I'm going to upgrade my charging system from stock to a Cycle Electric 50 amp 3 phase system on a 2000 flhtcui. The stock system only charges if the rpm's are 2000 or higher. The original owner had the stator and regulator replaced 3 times in less than 18000 miles. I don't feel like going through this again... ever. I got the kit from amazon.com for $388.19 with free shipping. Best price I could find. I've done stators on shovelheads and an evo but will be my first time getting into a twin cam. Any suggestions or things I should know before starting this? You guys always have some great ideas and advice. BTW I will be installing the air ride shocks with a compressor I read about in the DIY forum. I figure, with the extra power for the compressor, the upgrade would be needed eventually anyways.

only tip is do not use air impact tools!

I would be interested in how you make out with the new system and if you actually do see an increase in power output below 2000 rpms.

After I get some miles in on the new system i will update. Does the clutch have to be removed? Seems to me I've heard or maybe saw somewhere that on these newer bikes the primary chain can be removed without pulling the clutch out. I know its 15 yrs old but still considered newer to me as its the newest bike I've ever owned. Been a shovelhead guy for most of my yrs.

No change AFAIK! Entire primary has to come off, chain, compensator and clutch. I hope you plan on getting the factory service manual?! It will tell you all the fine details you need, such as torques etc.

Well, I installed the new charging system about 6 weeks ago but just now got a chance to take it out. The snow finally melted enough around here to go for a short ride. I also installed the diy air ride system I found on this forum in the diy section. The stator and rotor came out and went back in very easily. I didnt have to remove the clutch basket. I was able to get the primary chain off the compensating sprocket fairly easy. I just went for a short ride, about 30 miles, and it seemed to charge just fine. Gauge said just over 14 at speed and just over 12 at idle. I was under the impression that it should stay the same at any rpm. Either way, its charging now, where as the old one wasn't. That's my update. Thanks for your input guys. Much appreciated.

Its been a long winter for me I am waiting for new bars to show up any day but when I changed mine that's the first thing I noticed was over 14 volts on my digital gauge at start up and idle, unless I have the stereo turned up and hi beams on it drops to around 13.3 with all my stuff on. Put a volt meter on the battery at idle or on the tender leads I would think your stock gauge isn't that accurate is all that's wrong or make sure all the electrical connections are tight
