Upgrading a 5-speed trans to a 6-speed?
#71
Ya, but do you really think anyone else actually gives a $hit? It's your bike man, do it your way. Leave the righteous sanctimony at home.
I have a two 5 speeds at home right now. One is an 80" Evo. If there was ever a bike that needed a 6 speed my '95 EGC is surely it. And it's stock except for a mild cam, A/C and pipes.
The OP is asking for advice on a 6 speed box for HIS bike. He has several models to choose from. The Baker DD6 is the best choice without any doubt.
Simply changing pulleys will not get him where he wants to be even if it is cheaper.

That's because Graham knows hit stuff and I agree with him. As much as I would like to have one of your 6 speeds it just isn't in the budget. 90% of my riding is avoiding the super slab. If I am on a long trip I think plenty about a 6th gear but know my bike is doing just fine. It is the gas savings that would appeal to me but would take an awful lot of miles to make up the difference.

I'm thinking about upgrading my 2004 Road King to a 6-speed trans. Interstate riding is kind of rough doing 70MPH for extended distances in 5th gear. I see HD has the entire trans for $2700 or just the gear set for around $2K. Is this a worthwhile upgrade and can the trans be had at a cheaper price?

OD6 or DD6?
It would be hard to argue against Baker making the best boxes (when are we going automatic?) but, at the end of the day, it all just comes down to the mechanical ratios.
The final result in top gear is the same ... the 3.whatever ratio you are after. Where Baker takes you to is somewhere different, albeit better and more customized to your needs and wants.
That's its real advantage.
But, out of fairness and for the benefit of non-Rolex wearing riders, that should be admitted.
If you have, say. a 40,000 mile bike and are going to put 5,000 miles on it before selling ... then do you need to decide whether spending an 50 cent a mile makes sense? 10,000 miles ... it's 25 cent a mile.

Admitted? Really? You've GOT to be kidding.
Anyone with at least a double digit IQ and a computer can do the basic research needed to come up with a reasonable idea about which 6 speed will fit their needs. Sheesh!
Baker Drivetrain hides nothing from anyone (one could add an idiot icon here).
I have a 50K mile bike that's going to get a DD6 over the winter. Do you actually think I care what you think of my purchase?
Not hardly.

My 88 runs just fine at 80 MPH...not breathing hard at all...no need for an overdrive or six speed...I'd use that $3K to open the cam chest and replace the old cam followers and update the cams...I don't feel any particular need to increase the displacement either, I have plenty of power to do what I need it to do. That's just me, and I take the attitude that what I have here is a heavy touring bike, not a go-fast hot rod.
"Righteous sanctimony"...now where did you get the idea that that was the case? Let me direct your attention to the words "that's just me". I do believe that I am not the only one to approach an answer to the OP's post from their own point of view. But if that offends you...well, tough tit.
There's three pretty good examples.
While I can agree that my my own '06 SG goes right down the road with the stock 5 speed, I'm going to install a 6 speed over the winter.
Don't much care what you think about that.
I've done some motor work to this scoot too. Don't care what you think about that either.
It's my bike and my money and your opinion doesn't count no matter how pretty you want to make it appear.
If you want to share some real advice, do so, man. Leave your sanctimonious opinion at home.

This may help some who are comparing the OD6 to the DD6:

I added a SE Gearset to my 03RK and rode with it for about 20K miles. The motor was built to 95" with Cams, Heads and intake made 93/87 on the dyno and even then I had to downshift into 5th and sometimes even 4th when pulling a grade at anything less than 75......I noticed almost no difference in mileage ~2MPG with the 5 speed even on the open highway so in hindsight the only real benefit was a lower noise factor at freeway speeds.....not worth the difference IMO on that bike but the transmission did shift smoother than the stock 5 speed.....but the stock wasn't bad so not a big deal. In hindsight I would not do it again on that bike.
Now the 2014 SGS with the factory 6 speed is a very different story......this motor even stock with only slip-ons and no tuner (yet) feels like it is just made for a 6th gear so my only suggestion is if you think that upgrading your old bike with a 6 speed is going to give you the feel of a new bike.....it won't, that cn only be accomplished by writing the check
